It’s back-to-school season for parents which means planning, making lists, organizing and shopping for the school essentials – that includes snacks for school!

If you have a busy schedule, it can be tempting to throw in highly processed snacks with little nutritional value – like cookies, pop tarts, juice boxes and candy – because they’re quick and cheap. However, if you want to encourage healthy eating habits in your child’s life, it may be time to re-think your snack strategy and help them create a more balanced food approach that still includes their favorite snacks, but also presents an array of minimally processed options to encourage healthy, but not overly restrictive eating habits.

With these snack ideas and recipes, you’ll have plenty of ideas to help your child develop better eating habits that will set them up for a healthy and happy life!

  1. RX bar and blueberries

RX bars are a great snack option for kids because they’re delicious, high in protein to help keep your kids full and contain minimal ingredients (just egg whites, almonds, cashews and dates!). Add a cup of blueberries on the side and this combo makes a delicious, healthy and natural snack for your children!

2. Two Good Low Fat Strawberry Greek Yogurt with strawberries

The Two GoodGreek Yogurt brand is both low in fat and sugar (which is where most yogurts fall short!) and is high in protein!  You can choose from several different flavors and pair it with some fruit like strawberries on the side to give this snack more excitement for your kids!

3. 1 bag of quest barbecue chips and a banana

The quest protein chips are an amazing alternative to regular chips as they contain much more protein and less fat/sugar! These are still processed however, so add them into your children’s lunch as a treat from time-to-time rather than every day. Pack a banana on the side for that sweet kick!

4. A ham and cheese bagel

A quick, but hearty snack that almost any kid will love: 2-3 slices of deli ham and 1 slice of mozzarella cheese in between a Thomas’ everything bagel thin. It will take less than 1 minute for you to prepare and your kids will find this snack delicious and filling!

5. Apple slices with 2-3 tablespoons of peanut butter

Apple and peanut butter is a great combination that any kid or adult will love! However, be sure to opt for a natural peanut butter that only contains minimal ingredients like Justin’s Classic Peanut Butter.

6. Baby carrots and natural ranch dressing

A great way to get in vegetables for your kids while adding a nice touch of flavor! Most ranch dressings are laden with unnecessary ingredients, however, so a better choice for you and your children’s health is the ranch dressing from Primal Kitchen.

7. Strawberry Banana Corepower Protein Drink

This CorePower protein drink is by far the easiest for you parents to pack as it requires no work at all. Just stash this delicious fruity and high protein drink into your child’s lunch box and call it a day!

8. 100 Calorie Skinny Pop Popcorn Bag

Tastes JUST like regular popcorn without the unnecessary butter! And each bag packs only 100 calories so not only will your child LOVE this snack, but you can also pair it with a variety of other snacks without having to worry if you’re overdoing it on the calories!

9. Lightly Salted Almonds

Salted almonds are a delicious, easy and natural snack option for your kid that will also require very little preparation from you – just throw a handful of these into a snack bag, pair it with some fruit or yogurt and your child will have a healthy and yummy school snack!

10. Bare Apple Chips

These apple chips are naturally made through baking with no added sugar or preservatives! They’re sweet, crunch and your kids will no doubt love them. They also require no cutting or prepping and are a great choice to add if you’re on a time crunch.
